Saturday, April 19, 2008 @ Be a top cat in the pack – NUS RidgeCats
Dear NUS mates,

It was great to finally see you guys at our launch! All our sweat and efforts for the project paid off when you arrived on our NUS Second Life (SL) campus keen to explore and have fun. Emancipation! We are elated that NUS SL islanders who joined us during the launch are already looking hip and cool in SL, a few of them even found in-world “jobs”! A lot of those I have met have already asked about how they can be more involved in our SL campus or eventually become part of the NUS SL management.

For those of you who are not in-world yet here’s a brief introduction of NUS RidgeCats. NUS RidgeCats is the group started for our NUS community in SL. The NUS RidgeCat Gurus make up the management team of the NUS SL campus. The committee consists of primarily students; there are 9 of us in total. You can easily meet any of us on our SL campus as it is our home, the home of RidgeCats. Now as requested by many of you we shall present with much delight the RidgeCat progression system, the not-so-secret manual of how you can become one of the top cats.

Members:
These are our “freshcats” as all NUS students are automatically granted membership of NUS RidgeCat group. They are the young or new cats in the pack.

Regulars:
These are the cats which hang out regularly in the NUS SL campus and participate actively in our activities. They know the turf well and they are seasoned cats in the pack.

Seniors: These cats are talent spotted amongst our regulars they are the felines which go the extra mile to recruit new cats into the pack, help guide them and proactively involve themselves in activities rendering help to the organisers of the event. They are the junior management in the leadership of the pack and they move fast.

Mentors:
These cats are a breed of its own; they are adored by the other paws in the pack from the members to gurus. They have elevated from the ranks of the seniors as experts in the game and most importantly as the cats which always offer a helping paw to the rest of the pack. They are always around rising up to the occasion when duty calls. All mentors are invited to our real life RidgeCat summit where they may be promoted to the ranks of Gurus. These felines are the middle management in the leadership of the pack, they roar and rock in our islands.

Gurus:
These handpicked felines exude an exquisite aura as the top cats but they are hardly elusive. Their trails can seen everywhere on our islands and they are extremely approachable felines. They have been there done that and worked their way to the top of the pack. They make sure all the cats in the pack are taken care of. These cats are the senior management of the pack. Together with you they decide the destiny of the pack and its home.

Privileges
1. Invite (Guru, Mentor)
2. Kick (Guru)
3. Create proposals (Senior, Mentor, Guru)
4. Vote on proposals (Members and up)

NUS Second Life, the students’ co-created and co-owned campus.

Monday, April 7, 2008 @ Lights, Camera, Action!!
US Second Life’s inaugural avatar dress-up contest was held on last Friday night, along with our very own Mambo disco night. It was a great mix of mambo music and a smashing avatar competition!

Our participants were dressed up in various fancy costumes. One of our RidgeCat Seniors, Alloy, was dressed up in a red hot jacket, coupled with his super ‘bling’ gold chain. He looked like a typical “Ah Long”, no doubt a cool one at that =P (for the foreign students..Ah Long is a Singlish term for someone from the Mafia).

Nagato, another RidgeCat member, was dressed up as Sasuke (a Japanese manga character from ‘Naruto’), and even displayed some of his ‘powers’ such as summoning a huge monster. In addition to the fashion parade, our participants had to present a short self-introduction of themselves and answer questions from the judges and audience. Surprisingly, one of our contestants is actually a French studying in NUS. All the girls on the dance floor naturally went ga-ga over him.

Girls and boys, if you ever want to strike up a conversation with a French, perhaps you should keep this in mind:

Vous avez une grande personnalité, aimez-vous dîner avec moi?
(You have a great personality, would you like to have dinner with me?)

Got that? Très Bien!!

Thanks to everyone for making this event a success! I hope everyone had fun! See you guys for the next event!
