Building... One of the interesting sides of Second Life.
Though It is not a must 'know', it is a skill that is definitely a plus plus when it comes to showcasing and nuturing your creative side!
Most of the things that is inside SL is made/build by users (Yes! People like me and you!)
Many Builders make items or buildings based on real life.
(For example, the University Hall in NUS, the normal shoes and accessories that people wear.)
Some builders , on the other hand, build items that are based on imagination
which defies the laws of physics. Heres an Example :( a flying helicopter made up of words !)...

"How to Build?" . While building is considered hard by some, one of the key for success is , of course.. PATIENCE! Here are some ways to learn:
by starting on learning how to modify existing stuff that other people build
by attending live classes in Second Life(Under Search-> Events tab, select education and search!)
by trial and error
by online youtube tutorials or articles
by Torley's Lindens video (RECOMMENED!)
What an item is made up of : "prims" and "textures".
Prims are the basic shapes that you can rezz(make stuff appear) to make an item when in the 'build' window(hit 'b' on your keyboard, while ensuring that the chatbar is off). Normally, an item or a building is made up of a chunk of
prims (sounds reasonable ^_^.)
Textures are the pictures that cover the prims. Textures gives the object a more realistic look. You can get some default textures in your inventory ,or you can get them inworld (from other users)
but if you cant find what you are looking for you can make your own textures in gimp or photoshop then upload them for the price of L$10.
Seeing funny shapes that dosent look like the basic shapes? Well 2 possibilites .. either the prim has been tortured(playing with the settings of the basic shapes) or its a sculpty!
Sculpties are shapes that are exported from third party softwares like maya
then uploaded to Second Life. Here is something i made:

in to THIS!
Wondering about moving or animating objects and those that emit out funny looking weird pictures (particles), or maybe objects that makes your avatar/Character move ?
These brings you to the term scripting. Though it may take some time for those who do not have programming or scripting backgrounds to pick it up, it allows you to add special effects
to your builds. There are many script examples to learn from online, and places inside Second Life itself to learn (e.g College of Scripting, Music, and, Horsa ) . Some places provide free scripts for u to learn from too!
While there are so much more that has to be learn about it and to type about, its best found out by trying out yourself :)
Till next time,
