Second Life is an Internet-based virtual reality environment launched June 23, 2003.
Since opening to the public, it has grown explosively and today is inhabited by millions of Residents from around the globe.
Membership for Second Life is FREE.
NUS Second Life was launched on March 12.
Why Ridgecat? "Ridge" comes from the physical location of 'Kent Ridge' in real life and 'Cats' is an all too popular and natural choice of a mascot to be used. We hope that RidgeCat can form the basic entity of our NUS virtual communities, regardless, students, staff, alumni, NUS related support offices.
What can staffs & students benefit from NUS Second Life? NUS Second Life will enable learning, teaching, sharing, social interacting, playing and working in a 3D online virtual world where creativities thrive beyond imaginations and with endless possibilities. As a member of the NUS community, you can either create or attend tutorials (if lecturers/tutors are game enough to conduct one in the in-world), make friends and widen your social network, design the interactive 3D facilities, buildings & gadgets, attend official or public lectures, take part in social events or parties, hang out at cool joints, be an entrepreneur to construct building objects/structures and make Linden dollars (convertible to USD) and even meet international visitors visiting the island.
In this 3D online virtual world, you are only limited by your own imagination.
