Friday, August 5, 2011 @ Second Life Workshop (29 Jul)
Computer speakers. Hellgate London figurines. Earphones and other iPhone accessories.

Those were some of the free gifts and prizes that the 21 participants of the Second Life Workshop walked away with last Friday, 29 Jul.

And let's not forget the fun they all had learning how to use SL, playing an in-world race, and taking snapshots of their avatars.

(The photo above was taken by one of the workshop participants, QuirkyRabbit, or Tessa; that was her first time on SL. The eagle-eyed would no doubt point out that her avatar is a dragon - in Second Life, you can make your avatar just about anything you like.)

Interested in Second Life too? Want to get your hands on some of these goodies? Then prepare yourself for our Best Avatars Contest, where you stand to win Botak Jones vouchers, speakers, microphones, and tons of other goodies! 3 simple steps:
1. [SHOOT] form a team of two to four people, snap a shot of your
2. [LIKE] upload your photos onto our FB page at http://www.facebook.com/nussl, get your friends to like it

Hi freshies!

Thanks for stopping by our booth during the matriculation fair!

Burning to try Second Life already? To register for Second Life, just go to https://community.nus.edu.sg/secondlife/register and follow the instructions there.

Now, you have heard us explain how Second Life's a 3D virtual world where you can socialise, customise your avatar, visit famous landmarks, and make friends with people from all over the world - a place where, in short, you can do just about anything. Some NUS modules also use Second Life as an educational tool.

But that’s enough said about it. Like the finer things in life, Second Life is best experienced for yourself, not talked about in the abstract. One way to do that, of course, is to register online for Second Life at https://community.nus.edu.sg/secondlife/register

You are also invited to a workshop on Friday, 29 July, where we will help you get started with Second Life.

I. SECOND LIFE WORKSHOP

Date: 29 Jul

Timing: 10-12pm OR 1-3pm

Venue: ThinkLab, Computer Centre 3rd floor
(See http://www.nus.edu.sg/comcen/contactus/location.html for more detailed information on the location of the Computer Centre)

>> Please register for the workshop by logging on to http://bit.ly/slworkshop and filling in your details. <<

What's it in for me?

  • Experience Second Life with the nicest, most interesting people you'll ever meet (not to toot our horns, but yes, that's us)
  • Free SL tee-shirt
  • Free Botak Jones $5 voucher for the first 30 to sign up
  • Prime yourself for the Best Avatar Contest, where you stand to win attractive prizes worth $100
  • Learn how to kick ass at CORS bidding and school in general from seniors of various faculties (this includes knowing where to go to for late-night suppers and all those other things that seniors traditionally whisper to the chosen juniors)

    II. BEST AVATARS CONTEST

Don't miss your chance to take part in the Best Avatars Contest, where you stand to win up to $100 worth in prizes - microphones, speakers, thumb drives, Botak Jones and Frolick vouchers.

    To join the contest:

    1. SHOOT - form a team of two to four people, and snap a group shot of your team's SL avatars
    2. 'LIKE' - Post the photo on our Facebook page (facebook.com/nussl), making sure to get your friends to 'like' and comment on them
    3. MAIL - email us at nusridgecat@gmail.com with the picture and your details (avatar and real names, matric numbers, handphone numbers, email addresses, and faculty). You will need to do all of this by 14 Aug)

Photos will be judged based on both aesthetic quality and the number of 'likes'. More detailed instructions will be coming your way soon.

Watch our blog and Facebook page for more updates!

Questions? Email us at nusridgecat@gmail.com, or just call Wyhow (84209460) or Yongming (97583082).

Thank you for reading this; we hope to see you on Friday!

    With much <3,

    The NUS RidgeCats

    Thursday, July 21, 2011 @ Best Avatar Contest 2011

So you like making your avatar look good. Quirky. Cool. And, like most people, you have a secret passion for photography.

Rejoice. This fall, NUS Ridgecats will be hosting a Best Avatars Contest, where you stand to win up to $100 worth in prizes - microphones, speakers, thumb drives, Botak Jones and Frolick vouchers.

Joining the contest is simple. All you need to do is form a team of two to four people, snap a group shot of your team's Second Life avatars; post it on Facebook, making sure to get your friends to 'like' and comment on them; and then email us at nusridgecat@gmail.com with the (hi-res) picture and your details (avatar and real names, matric numbers, handphone numbers, email addresses, and faculty) - all by 14 Aug.

Judging criteria include aesthetics, originality of concept, as well as the reception your shot garners on Facebook (secret hint #1: the more 'likes' and comments you get, the higher your chances of winning).

But wait, you might say - what if I don't know anything about Second Life?

Don't fret: the NUS Ridgecats will be hosting workshops on 29th Jul at The Think Lab in Computer Centre. You can come either for the 10-12pm or 1-3pm tutorial (or both).

(Secret hint #2: Come for the tutorial, and you'll get a free NUS Second Life tee!)

(Secret hint #3: We'll teach you all those kick-ass Second Life avatar-zhenging and photography techniques during the workshop. And if you need any help with CORS...)

Have questions? Email us at nusridgecat@gmail.com, or just talk to us during the Matric Fair!
